How Vintage Fitness Fashion Inspired the Post Covid Name Change Every Spa Should Make

One of my most popular pinterest pins is how sitcoms are like spa treatments. Being a retro stylist & advocate of healthy living via fashion, I frequently find myself on Antenna TV or MeTV — sometimes only to clothes watch. But I wasn’t expecting a vintage show to take me on a spa day that inspired a way for spas to flourish post covid!

Yet, one of my fave seventies shows, Three’s Company, jogged an idea to plop spa’s past on it’s isolated present. If you’ve never watched Three’s Company (shame on you!) just kidding, the premise (scandalous in its day) was 2 girls and 1 guy are roommates. Because the landlord won’t allow cohabiting, the guy pretends he’s gay. You can watch on Cozi TV.

“Come and knock on our door!” for zany mixups and double entendres. The episode, “Mighty Mouth”, has Jack chasing after a girl who’s a fitness teacher at her brother’s spa. TV spa sightings are rare and always pique my interest.

So Jack sends Chrissy and Janet to take a workout class and scope out the brother. The spa set is a vision in paneling and burnt orange. But what really struck me were the staff outfits! The brother wore a white t-shirt emblazoned with black velvet letters, “Harvey’s Health Spa” and Jack’s love interest sported a tight black tee with white velvet letters.

First, what fab spa branding, velvet flocking was a huge trend in seventies tees, (one I still can’t resist when I find it) and the font was right off a “Gee Your Hair Smells Terrific” bottle. What a stylish way to remind your spa guests why they are there and who you are . . . you’re HEALTH!

And after Covid, people returning to spas are going to be focusing on the how can this boost my immune system, make me feel better aspect of spa. What better way to remind them than having the word “health” added to your spa name, marketing or on outfits?

And by emphasizing health, spas address something that was happening before Covid, the ambiguity of the word “Spa” itself, is it a nail spa, a foot spa, a hair spa, or even a jacuzzi store!

So why not remind your guests that you are improving their wellbeing and their health is getting better point blank? You could even have some groovy t-shirts made for your staff. Fashion doesn’t just help people flourish it can help businesses as well. Cheers to our new, improved apres covid spa time!
